The article “New Key to Tissue Regeneration: Drug Treatment Triggers Sodium Ions to Re-grow Nerves and Muscle” was founded by Science Daily. The article was composed on September 29, 2010. The discusses how sodium ions may not be as bad as everyone thinks they are. Sodium ions may take place in a big development in the regeneration of tissue that has been severely issued.
The articles discusses that sodium ions may be helpful in the “regeneration” of formerly injured cells. Most of us associate sodium with high blood pressure and a bigger issue, cardiovascular disease. Tuft University has found through research that the injection of sodium ions into injured cells may repair the damaged cells, found in the spinal cord and muscle. The injection of small molecules can be injected directly after a severe injury to the tissue(s). This development has broken new ground due to the fact it requires no gene therapy, and can be administered immediately following an injury. It’s neat to note that this new development can even be administered after a wound has healed over. A study was conducted on tadpoles, where their tails were regenerated using these injections. The tails were apparent just after an hour of treatment.
This new development is extremely important to society. Limb loss and spinal cords issues are a medical problem world-wide. With this new development these problems can be solved. I am not a science whiz, I did not and do not understand all the terminology in this article. However, I found this article to be extremely informative and beneficial to society. The link to the article is listed below. The article was very informative, and the studies are findings seem to be phenomenal, check it out!
